STORY BEHIND THE SONG “INSULT TO INJURY”

“Insult to Injury” is one of my favourite songs on the album and was one of the first songs written for Moth Complex. I love the percussive, heavily electronic sounds Gerry created and how they contrast with the acoustic feel and gentle melodies in the chorus.

The song is basically saying that “injury” is done around the time of a tough situation or event. The “insult” is about those situations where although time moves on, people don’t move on, so life can feel stuck. The song came together very fast and unsurprisingly from the tone of it, I was angry when I wrote it. The percussive, heavily electronic verse suits the heavy feeling I had when I was writing it and the acoustic nature and gentle melodies in the chorus match the feeling of having had enough of the heaviness and wanting to move on from frustration.

I really enjoyed writing “Insult To Injury” and remember feeling chills at being in the flow of creativity and relief at venting and getting all the anger out of me. And then when the song was written I felt really good again. I love that!

STORY BEHIND THE SONG “FEEL ALIVE”

I wrote “Feel Alive” after reading the book “Hello Cruel World” by Kate Bornstein. I’ve never read anything like it and I wished I had that book when I was growing up! It’s smart and funny and unconventional and brilliant.

“Hello Cruel World” has the subtitle “101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks and Other Outlaws” and Kate says “the world needs more kind people in it, no matter who or what they are or do”.

The book really inspired the sentiment in the song “How is a difference a weakness? It’s mindless. We all lose.” I always love that we are all unique individuals. I like when people look different and express themselves in unique ways. So I always feel confused when others seem so critical of difference and diversity, in whatever shape or form that comes, when people feel threatened rather than accepting or even celebrating colour and character and us all being unique.

I have experienced being bullied in life. After reading “Hello Cruel World”, I let all of that go and just felt strong. So this is sort of a “Why can’t we all just get along?” song. Let each other be as brilliant and wonderful as we all are!

STORY BEHIND THE SONG “NON-FICTION”

Non-Fiction was written around the same time as Sleeper, when I was working to build my confidence but felt frustrated by my self-doubt. Kind of an unsettled state of mind. It also ties in to my relationship at the time. In the song, it goes through all my to-ing and fro-ing and moments of conviction, then doubt and contradiction. It asks questions I was driving myself crazy with… things that only time could answer… But it’s optimistic, I think… wanting to live up to promises and to change and to really live as opposed to just subsist. And it says “Clearer, all I hold to, not a fiction all this time”.

STORY BEHIND THE SONG “SLEEPER”

Before I started Moth Complex I was really shy about singing on front of people. Painfully shy! I started doing backing vocals to get more confidence and even did acting classes. Testament to the expression “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”, it got easier and easier and ultimately, I decided to do MX and started writing songs. And I sang….

“Sleeper” was written around this time and largely about this. It is about how I was swaying between self-belief and self-doubt. It was about finding the courage to believe in myself and about how in the “gaining confidence” part I was choosing not to settle for less than I wanted because in the settling, I could feel myself suffocating and in choosing to be brave, I felt life opening up.

What I know now is that it might be hard to find confidence or take a chance, but it’s much harder NOT to. For me anyway…

STORY BEHIND THE SONG “SWARM”

“Swarm” is a song that is full of strength and self-assurance and fight. It’s about the awareness that you can be who you want to be and that you can decide how you want to feel and how you want to behave towards people regardless of how they have been to you. It’s about how you can use whatever situation, no matter how hard, to learn and grow from and be a better person and about how within even the darkest place, you find a core strength inside and this can be a place from where real and positive change and transformation can begin. “Swarm” was written about my own experience of all that.
